Making a Site Model - The Outpost Project
Building physical models has always been a part of my design process, building them is a form of three-dimensional sketching. Although many architects opt to skip this step in favor of constructing digital models only, this practice pulls me away from the computer and ultimately produces better results (for me). I'll be using this as I enter the schematic design phase for this residence on Isle au Haut we’re calling, The Outpost. Make sure you catch part one of the video series to see how we chose this site.
The model is 16” wide by 36” long and consists of 57 cork contours. Links to all the materials (affiliated) used to construct:
Cork underlayment (contours) 1/8” nominal thickness (3/32” actual)
Wooden dowels (trees) 3/16” + 1/4” assorted lengths
Silk pins (for tree bases)
Translucent film (water)
1/2” Homasote (base)
1 1/4” - 3” screws to attach the base layers together
