now

Some of the things that are inspiring my work right now in the studio: tools, books, YouTube channels, podcasts and more.

On the desk in my “shed” ( the Long Studio is also featured in this book )

READING

Work From Shed - Beautifully printed + curated book from Hoxton Mini Press featuring innovative, tiny, workspaces (including 30X40’s LongStudio). Interestingly, the book is also ‘carbon neutral’.

Wayward - (See also > Listening) Stories + Photographs from a personal hero. I admire the Chris’ conviction to seek adventure while staying connected to his family.

Of Wolves and Men - A nuanced study of wolves and man’s relationship to them. Beautifully written with insights that reach far beyond the natural world. Learning how to see the world is the occupation of the architect and I’m finding this provides me new ways of seeing.

The Unthinkable : Who Survives Disasters - and Why - This is a survivor’s handbook of sorts and fulfills my preoccupation with micro-optimizations that can lead to a longer life.

LISTENING

The Wayward Path of Chris Burkard - Chase Jarvis interviews Chris Burkard (see also < ‘Reading’) on the Creative Live podcast. Both are the embodiment of the “we are all hyphens” lifestyle. This was such a relatable and inspiring listen.

How Not to Drown - Robert Smith + Chvurches collaborate. Guilty pleasure.

Four Thousand Weeks. Remembering just how limited the (average) time we each have here reframes how we approach doing work that matters.

Conscious by Annaka Harris. Trying to understand consciousness, in under three hours! (02:22 to be exact). On deck after 4K weeks above.

Audible has helped me increase the number of books I’m able to ingest by listening. Join Audible and get my audio book for free here.

LEARNING

Models as Design Tools - As an architecture student, I drooled over the models of Morphosis. Finally, this is my chance to learn their techniques.

Kayaking skills - I’ve lived in Maine for 22 years and finally decided this was the year to start exploring the Maine Island Trail Association’s off-shore padding destinations.

103 Bits of Advice I Wish I Known - Always a student. Always. Thank you Kevin Kelly for sharing so generously.

Morgan Fallon - 10 Years on the Road with Anthony Bourdain. Still miss A.B. so anything that brings him closer is a good thing. Thoughtful interview by T.F. drawing out engaging, interesting responses and some incredible travel adventures.
